Unknown Grace

Unknown Grace explores how the environment in which a person grows up can influence their ability to discover, develop, and fulfil their God-given potential. The artwork portrays a crowned figure whose body is covered in leaf-like textures, holding a lantern that represents the light of knowledge, purpose, wisdom, and leadership. Although he wears a crown, symbolising his potential to become a king or a leader, his eyes are covered, suggesting that he cannot fully see or understand the purpose for which he was created. The lantern he holds represents the light entrusted to him to illuminate the world, yet his present circumstances prevent him from fully recognising the power and responsibility within him. As the artist, I use this figure to communicate a deeper message about human potential and the influence of the environment. Sometimes, people are born with extraordinary abilities and the potential to become great leaders, innovators, and agents of change. However, when they find themselves in the wrong environment, their abilities may remain hidden, their dreams may be delayed, and their understanding of their own purpose may become limited. The crown suggests greatness, the covered eyes represent limited awareness, and the lantern symbolises the light and responsibility entrusted to an individual. Together, these elements reveal the conflict between what a person is capable of becoming and what their circumstances allow them to recognise. The artwork does not suggest that the environment alone determines a person's destiny. Rather, it emphasises that the right environment can encourage growth, reveal hidden abilities, and accelerate progress, while an unfavourable environment can create obstacles that delay success. Sometimes, a change of environment is necessary for a person to discover their identity, recognise their worth, and begin fulfilling their purpose. ### The message behind the artwork Not everyone who appears lost lacks greatness; some people have simply not found the environment that will help them discover it. A person may carry the potential of a king yet live without recognising their crown. They may possess the light to guide others yet remain unaware of its purpose because of the circumstances surrounding them. Unknown Grace reminds us that discovering greatness is not always about acquiring something new.
