WHEN A HUG WAS WORTH MORE THAN A KISS
WHEN A HUG WAS WORTH MORE THAN A KISS Romantic Short Film · American Indie Style · 3–5 Minutes Written for a small cast, one apartment location, and a simple camera setup. SCENE 1 — THE GOODBYE EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING — NIGHT Streetlights glow against the pavement. A couple stands outside the entrance of her apartment building. He pulls her into a long hug. She wraps her arms around his waist, resting her head against his chest. BOYFRIEND You know I have to go, right? GIRLFRIEND Unfortunately. He laughs. BOYFRIEND I’ll see you tomorrow. She holds him tighter. GIRLFRIEND Just five more seconds. He kisses the top of her head. BOYFRIEND You’ve been saying that for the last ten minutes. GIRLFRIEND And you keep falling for it. They laugh. He kisses her gently, then finally lets her go. She watches him walk away, smiling to herself. CUT TO: SCENE 2 — HIS SWEATER INT. APARTMENT BEDROOM — NIGHT A bedside lamp glows. Soft music plays in the background. She walks into the bedroom wearing his oversized sweatshirt. She climbs onto the bed, pulls the sleeves over her hands, and brings one sleeve close to her face. She inhales softly. A little smile appears. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) I should probably wash this. She looks at the sweatshirt. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) But then it won’t smell like him anymore. She laughs quietly at herself. Her phone lights up with a message. BOYFRIEND (TEXT) You home safe? She types back. GIRLFRIEND (TEXT) Yeah. Miss you already. His reply comes almost immediately. BOYFRIEND (TEXT) Baby, I literally just left. She laughs and shakes her head. GIRLFRIEND (TEXT) And? Is there a problem? BOYFRIEND (TEXT) None whatsoever. I miss you too. She hugs the phone to her chest for a moment, smiling. SCENE 3 — 1:23 A.M. INT. APARTMENT BEDROOM — LATER The music has faded. The room is quiet. She lies on her back, staring at the ceiling. She turns to one side, smiles, then rolls onto her back again. She checks the time on her phone. 1:23 A.M. She sighs. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) Six years. She looks at their picture together on her phone. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) Six whole years, and this man still has me acting like I just got my first boyfriend. She laughs under her breath. A brief flashback begins. SCENE 4 — THE MEMORY EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING — EARLIER THAT NIGHT — FLASHBACK He opens his arms. She walks straight into them. He wraps her up in a warm embrace. She closes her eyes and rests her cheek against his chest. The world seems to go quiet. He pulls back slightly to look at her. BOYFRIEND What? GIRLFRIEND Nothing. BOYFRIEND Then why are you looking at me like that? She smiles. GIRLFRIEND Can you just hold me? His expression softens. He pulls her back into his arms. BOYFRIEND I got you, baby. She closes her eyes. They kiss softly, then rest their foreheads together. CUT BACK TO: SCENE 5 — WHAT LOVE FEELS LIKE INT. APARTMENT BEDROOM — NIGHT She hugs the sweatshirt closer. Her smile slowly settles into a peaceful expression. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) It’s funny. People always talk about the first kiss, the butterflies, the excitement of falling in love. She looks at the empty space beside her. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) But nobody talks about how it feels when someone becomes your safe place. She closes her eyes, remembering his arms around her. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) How one hug can make a bad day feel smaller. How being held by the right person can make the whole world feel a little less heavy. She pulls the blanket over herself. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) Six years later, and I still don’t want him to let go first. A quiet laugh escapes her. GIRLFRIEND (V.O.) And honestly? I hope he never does. She finally closes her eyes, still smiling. The camera slowly pulls away from the bed. FADE TO BLACK. FINAL TITLE CARD WHEN A HUG WAS WORTH MORE THAN A KISS “Because sometimes, the arms you fall asleep missing are the only place you ever truly feel at home.”
