Where's Death?
Marie stared, numb and unable to join in the screaming from her colleagues around her. There was a man running all over the hospital yard, trying to escape the terrified doctors, nurses and guards who tried to catch him. On a normal day, in a normal world, this would have been a funny situation, free of fear, and the man would have been caught, sedated, and taken to the psych ward. Only, today was not a normal day, and they were not in the normal world.
In a normal world, a decapitated man should be dead... not running all over the yard and scaring the shit out of everyone.
For the last eight months, no one had been able to die. You read that correctly. Fatal accident victims still stayed alive, despite having their guts spilled and crushed. Old people in hospice who had just hours to live suddenly did not go. There was a child who got hit by a drunk driver and should have died on impact. She was somewhere in the hospital, strapped up to machines, with her head twisted in an ungodly manner that no doctor dared correct.
People were not dying anymore, and it was terrifying.
Now, as Marie was looking out into the yard, watching a man who should have died from being beheaded by a crane on a construction site run around, she wondered how long she had before she went insane. There were no rooms in hospitals to house the... undead?... anymore. The wards and halls were filled with abnormalities writhing and groaning in pain no medicine or medical procedure could ease.
Where the hell was death?!
A sudden cold filled the room, and Marie wrapped her arms around herself. She was about to tap a colleague and ask him if there was something wrong with the air conditioning when she noticed that everyone seemed fine. No one was shivering or trying to get warm. She was the only one feeling cold.
"Yep, I'm going insane," she mumbled.
She walked down the hall and paused at the room of an old woman who should have died six months ago and froze. There was a man in the room. He was dressed nice, but he was so pale, she thought he was sick, and he had his hands out like he was carrying... someone.
Marie looked closer and realised he was indeed carrying a person. She looked like a younger, healthier version of the old woman! The man paused and looked up, straight at her. His eyes were sad, and they glistened with unshed tears. He opened his mouth, and what she heard sounded like a cluster of whispers in heavy wind.
"I am so terribly sorry. I've fallen behind. Forgive me."
Then he bowed his head, and disintegrated into silver shards of light, taking the woman in his arms with him. Marie ran into the room and looked at the heart monitor attached to the old woman's body.
Flat line.
Fear dissolved into a raging bubble of joyous realization and she ran out into the hallway and threw her hands up in the air.
"We have a code blue! Someone's dead!"
