I’m just a girl Who likes the weird Finds the dark alluring Comforting and captivating I dislike insincerity I detest being led on I hate feeling disgruntled I loathe feeling trapped They say “you talk very little” “don’t talk too loud” “laugh while you still can” “don’t laugh like that” “cross your legs” “wear a dress” “say yes” “be nice” “be sweet” “be less” God forbid a girl has opinions Sharp enough to slice Your self-projecting pretentious advices Clean in half I’m just a girl Who likes what she likes Black boots and bold truths Books with strong female characters Stories where the girl doesn’t die Just because she dared To want something different From the norm God-forbid I’m not What you deem role-model-worthy I’m not your soft-spoken daughter Nor a mirror for your discomfort I wear sarcasm just as my roots Proud black and unapologetic I roll my eyes and my sleeves In the same motion God forbid I’m just a girl Who knows who she is Even if you don’t
