WHEN THE IMPOSSIBLE BECOMES POSSIBLE
Life sometimes has a way of surprising us. The things we think are impossible sometimes turn out to be possible after all.
This is the story of Grace, a fourteen-year-old girl who lost both her parents in a fatal car accident.
Life became a nightmare for her. It felt as though everything was coming to an end, and she had barely gone halfway through her secondary school education.
With no choice but to live with a relative, Grace had to leave the reputable secondary school she attended in Lagos for a school where they barely had enough chairs for the students. To make matters worse, she had to trek for miles to get there.
Grace wasn't used to this kind of life. She had always been taken to and from school, and now she had to walk long distances just to get an education. You can imagine how frustrating that must have been for a young girl who had already lost so much.
But there was another reason her life had taken such a drastic turn.
After her parents died, the family discovered that her father had used his properties as collateral for a ₦100 million bank loan, which he had not repaid before his death. The bank had to seize his properties, leaving Grace with nothing of the comfortable life she had once known.
She was only fourteen.
Grace knew she had to adapt. There was no one else she could depend on, and life had to go on, whether she was ready for it or not.
With time, she began to adjust to her new reality.
She had written her Junior WAEC before her parents died, so she proceeded to Senior Secondary School 1. Her aunt, whom she lived with, promised to do her best to take care of her.
To help out, Grace assisted her aunt at her shop after school. It became part of her daily routine, and life continued that way until she was ready to sit for her WAEC and UTME examinations.
Her aunt struggled to raise the money for the examinations, but she eventually managed to do so. Grace was finally going to write them alongside her classmates.
She studied hard, wrote the examinations, and came out in flying colours.
Then came the next question.
What was going to happen to her university dream?
Grace and her late mother had always talked about her studying abroad. It was something they had dreamed about together, something they had hoped would one day become a reality.
But now, everything seemed impossible.
Her aunt could barely afford to send her to a public university in Nigeria, let alone sponsor her education abroad.
For a while, Grace didn't know what to do.
Eventually, she decided to learn a skill. She enrolled to learn tailoring, hoping that perhaps she could build a future for herself that way.
Maybe I'm not meant to go to a university, she thought one day, her eyes filled with tears. Or maybe it's just something that will happen in the future.
And so, she began her tailoring journey.
Grace was diligent at work, and it didn't take long for her boss to notice her dedication. She was hardworking, brilliant, and a little more educated than some of the people she met at the shop. Her boss grew fond of her because of the way she carried herself and the care she put into her work.
Then, one day, something unexpected happened.
A woman came into their shop to have some clothes sewn.
She was dressed in a sparkling, flowing gown, her hair neatly packed, and her appearance was elegant. She arrived in a black G-Wagon, giving the impression that she was a woman of considerable means.
Everyone greeted her warmly when she entered the shop.
After discussing what she wanted, Grace's boss asked Grace to handle the woman's clothes. She trusted her to do a good job and take proper care of them.
Grace did not disappoint.
When the woman received her clothes, she was impressed by the quality of the work. She praised the shop and promised to bring more clothes in the future.
Some time later, Grace's boss asked her to deliver another set of clothes to the woman at her residence because the woman couldn't come to the shop herself.
Grace went to deliver the clothes, and the woman welcomed her warmly. She even offered her food, but Grace politely declined, as she had been taught at home.
The woman looked at her for a moment before asking a question.
"Young girl, why aren't you in school? You're still so young."
Grace hesitated.
Then, she told the woman her story.
She told her about losing her parents, leaving her former school, living with her aunt, and watching her university dream slowly slip away.
As she spoke, the woman listened.
And by the time Grace finished, the woman was moved to tears.
She couldn't believe how much the young girl had been through at such a tender age. Yet, despite everything, Grace was still hardworking, respectful, and determined to make something of her life.
The woman promised to help her.
Grace was overwhelmed with gratitude. She thanked the woman and asked to leave, knowing her boss would be waiting for her at the shop.
She didn't know exactly what the woman had in mind, but she left with a little hope in her heart.
Weeks passed.
Then, one day, the woman returned to the shop.
This time, she had come for Grace.
She told her that she was ready to sponsor her university education.
For a moment, Grace couldn't believe what she was hearing.
The very thing she had almost given up on was suddenly becoming a reality.
She burst into tears, thanking the woman over and over again. She had once thought that if university ever happened for her, it would be many years into the future, if it happened at all.
But now, it was happening right before her eyes.
It almost felt like a dream.
Only this time, it was real.
Her dream was coming alive.
Grace couldn't contain her excitement. She hurried home to share the news with her aunt, who was equally overjoyed.
Together, they praised the Lord, grateful for the unexpected turn their lives had taken and excited about what the future held.
Grace had thought her dream was over.
She had thought that losing her parents meant losing the future they had dreamed about together.
But life had surprised her.
What once seemed impossible was now possible.
And she was finally one step closer to the future she had always dreamed of.
The End.
